I'd like everyone to be AWARE of how The Health Care Act (and this economic climate) is probably affecting you! And, you may want to compare your 2013 pay stubs to the 2012 stubs re: your tax deductions (and maybe the other deductions?).
It has drastically affected our little family since the beginning of 2013 and got worse on July 1st. Both of us are having higher taxes taken out of our paychecks now. And, after July 1st, my part-time hours were cut to only 29 hours per week. In total, we're losing between $700 and $1000 a month in income. (If someone is not 'full-time', employers have to limit the hours to 29 hours or less per week - OR offer health insurance to them, is how it was explained to me.) I'm losing up to 11 hours per week even though I already pay $755.00 per month (w/ $1000 yearly deductible) for private health insurance (now with less income!).
Since I've paid my own health insurance for years (I was previously self-employed), I even asked my boss if the law demanded that the company only OFFER health insurance, or had to PROVIDE it. If it only had to OFFER it, could I reject it& continue working my regular 33 - 40 hours? His response was "if we OFFER it, we have to be PREPARED to PROVIDE it. AND it would be discriminatory to allow you to work the higher hours if others can't afford their own health insurance." (Their hours would have to be 29 or less - thus discrimination.)
My husband has a $3000 yearly deductible (!!!) on his company-provided health insurance to keep his contribution as low as possible. Thankfully, he's healthy and I hope he stays that way (for many reasons, but for one, he seldom goes to the doctor - because of the high deductible!) I guess one of the things that really gripes me is we limit our doctors' visits and treatment because of the high costs AND we have to pay for others who don't pay anything - and I've seen folks with no insurance use the emergency room (VERY expensive treatment option!) like a private doctor. I'll get off my soap box now.
And with the possible sequestration issues, my company - and many others - are hesitant to make employees 'full-time' (with connected benefits) because they don't know how business is going to do. AND because of sequestration, the company hasn't given raises, either (even with a good job evaluation!). So, friends, please be aware of what's going on.
