When Congress was created, the intent for American government was to be an ever changing, dynamic body that embraced the people's new ideas, concepts and beliefs while upholding the Constitution. Breaking free from the elite rule of England, our Founding Fathers would be horrified at our Congress and politicians who now represent the elite ruling class. Their sole purpose is to perpetuate their own power and existence. All of us need to forget party lines and take a hard look at the people who claim to represent us. Our Founding Fathers believed that Americans should serve in Congress for a limited number of years in Washington D.C. before returning to their communities and families, so as to avoid the creation of a permanent ruling class. Seems to us that a permanent ruling class is exactly what we have right now.
During the first 100 years of the Senate’s existence, members who made it into their second six-year term were considered long-time veterans. An incredible 42% of current Congressional members have served more than 20 years…and that's where the immense power and abuse in Congress is centered. This is clearly not in line with the Congressional role our Founders intended. And with tenure as the main criteria for power and committee membership in Congress, the ruling elite are protecting that tenure at all costs. It is impossible to serve the people and serve your own interests at the same time. We need to stop fearing the "other side" and clear out EVERYONE. Only when we have the guts to do that, will we see government working for the people instead of corporate demands.
